Pressing pause
Sometimes the best project deliverable we can recommend is pressing pause.
Recently, we started a conversation with a brand about building out their sampling and production docs.
On paper, it seemed straightforward. Build out the bill of materials and start to prep for production.
About 30 minutes into the conversation, something interesting happened.
As we talked through the product, we uncovered a handful of questions that hadn't actually been answered yet.
A few construction details were still evolving. There were decisions that would affect nearly every page of the documentation.
Could we have started building the documents? Absolutely.
But we'd likely have been rebuilding them a few weeks later, costing the client both time and money.
Sometimes the fastest way forward is slowing down long enough to answer the right questions first.
One thing we've realized over the years is that clients rarely hire us because they need a quick sketch or a tech pack.
They hire us because they want a partner who can help them decide what should happen next.
Sometimes that's creating the documents.
Sometimes it's recommending another round of testing.
Sometimes it's finding a simpler path entirely.
The deliverables matter, and knowing when not to create them matters just as much.
